Welcome to this companion website to Alison Zarrow's Sociology honors thesis at Stanford University submitted in March 2010. This research project was supported in part by a major grant from Stanford's Office of Undergraduate Advising & Research. The thesis explores the decline of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, as revealed by interviews with Tulsans who witnessed those transformations, and as illustrated by the changing number & location of civic and fraternal groups over the time period 1950 to 2000.
I am most interested in understanding whether and how the loss of a city's shared "center" affects its social capital.
